Ed Hodgkinson's third solo show at Everard Read, Cape Town, will present works derived from one fundamental source: drawing.
For Hodgkinson, the results of drawing from the model are an abstracted translation from what is seen, the drawn line like a stream of consciousness or, as Erika Naginski describes it ‘...an activity that exemplifies an imagination in flux’.
Hodgkinson's practice meanders lyrically between line and form, the essence of gesture comes to the fore, allowing a sense of free-flowing movement and vitality to occur. Hodgkinson’s large-scale, enamel on aluminium paintings explore the relationship between chance and process within a structured environment. Strikingly graphic, these paintings use a pared-down but powerfully descriptive line against a monochromatic backdrop of intense colour. Hodgkinson transposes the qualities of chance, spontaneity & abbreviation found in observational line drawing directly into his painting. Creating, against the flat colour field, a line that is daring, elliptical, subtly textured, and at times surprisingly abstract.
Counterbalancing this immediacy, Hodgkinson's languid subjects are quietly reflective, sensual and poignant. Here Hodgkinson invites the viewer to reflect upon the fading role of the romantic within post-modern critique. Hodgkinson brings the tradition of observational drawing into the present with a sense of lightness and grace. He is an artist that conveys a musicality that is controlled but never controlling but, above all, it is felt.
Ed Hodgkinson (1973) lives and works in London. He has exhibited widely in London and internationally, showing in New York, Chicago, LA, Tokyo, Cape Town Stockholm, Hong Kong and Reykjavik. He studied at Camberwell College of Art and is represented by galleries in London and Cape Town.
