"Sight" - Caccia & da Silva : PAST EXHIBITIONS : Everard Read Cape Town

SIGHT

02 - 15 September

Everard Read, Cape Town, is delighted to present ‘Sight’, an exhibition by Arabella Caccia & Deborah da Silva.

SIGHT is the culmination of a collaboration between Arabella Caccia (a painter and a sculptor) and Deborah da Silva (a photographer). This partnership has resulted in a dynamic creative process which pushed the limits of the artists’ individual skills, creating something new and fresh.

‘Sight’ consists mostly of black and white images. The process by which these artworks were created involves the layering of drawing and photography through photomontage, projection and collage. The technique is at no point disguised, and juxtaposes the loose, tactile quality of the drawings with the clarity of the photographed scenes.

More than this, unlikely images are layered together, merging the incongruous worlds of dreams and reality. The images stem from events that we see and experience in our everyday life, but which seem to evaporate into the mists of our rational minds. Figures and settings straddle the divide that exists between the two worlds and pose the questions: what is the difference between them? Where does the one begin and the other end? The artworks have a timeless quality, which expresses the paradox that both the existent and the imaginary exist in parallel; with ‘Sight’, each is given equal importance. This duality is in itself a reality.

The works have been printed by master printer Tony Meintjes, whose in-depth knowledge of his particular field brings the work alive, revealing all the subtleties of texture and shade. Each is printed on rough Hahnemüle etching paper in two sizes (153 x 112cm and 112 x 84cm), in editions of 8.
