JEANNE HOFFMAN

(b. 1978 Cape Town, South Africa)

Exploring the emotional and socio-cultural dimensions of place, Jeanne Hoffman revels in the spaces between, in the liminal tension between language and the ineffable, between the mediated and the primordial, between movement and stasis. She draws on fragmented (re)collections and multiple viewpoints from her everyday environment, assembling referential forms in relation with one another, creating movement, dialogue and meaning on the fringes of delineation. The artworks open up imaginary spaces where multiple encounters and confl icts create fertile juxtapositions, where paradoxes can, and do, co-exist. Hoffman’s paintings function thus as dwelling points, as “temporary shelters for thoughts, devices for contemplation” that permit both artist and viewer to enter into a poetic landscape to engage with what words cannot say, being transformed by the gestures at play, making room for recognition, surprise and even refuge.

Hoffman has held numerous solo and group exhibitions, both locally and abroad, and has participated in residencies in Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland and South Africa.
