LIONEL SMIT: IN STUDIO

IN STUDIO is an exhibition born from the immediacy of making—an environment where ideas are tested, fragments are formed, and the language of painting and sculpture is constantly reimagined. This body of work reflects the energy of experimentation that unfolds in my studio: an eclectic mix of portraits and sculptural fragments.

Alongside the paintings are sculptures that take the form of fragments—an eye, a nose, a mouth—drawn from the tradition of clay studies in the studio. These works suggest both the discipline of practice and incompleteness.

Rather than presenting final resolutions, these works are glimpses into a process. IN STUDIO invites the viewer to step inside the atmosphere of experimentation, where ideas overlap, collide, and transform. It is a celebration of the act of making—of allowing the studio to be not only a site of production, but also a subject in itself.
