LUCINDA MUDGE: All Is Well

LUCINDA MUDGE | ALL IS WELL | 4 – 28 OCTOBER 2023

It is fair to say that painting and ceramics have formed a neat duo in my studio. This exhibition was made by focusing my time equally on both mediums.

Painting has provided me with a sense of peacefulness, and this is why the paintings in this exhibition offer a serene otherworldliness. I wanted them to evoke the idea of a strange and unimportant reality, and of nothingness. The title of four paintings in the collection, ‘Do Nothing, Say Nothing, Be Nothing, can be seen as either an inspiration, or the ultimate failure of an adult life.

While working with ceramics allows magic and joy, it also brings risk. The ceramic piece in this show titled ‘Give Me Certainty, Give Me Uncertainty’ touches on the idea of risk-taking, a theme that remains central to my work.

I have been making ceramics in Keurboomstrand for over a decade, persevering through many difficult situations. It has never been easy, and this year I have been relentlessly pursuing my practice despite the country’s battles with dwindling and irregular electricity supply. As an established ceramic artist, this forced me to relook the options available to me. From November 2022 until August 2023 I was only able to fire my kiln a handful of times, which led me to pursue an area of art that I have always felt comfortable with: painting. In the meanwhile, my husband and brother have been able to build me a new hybrid solar kiln system, and this body of work was fired in this way – a major breakthrough.

With these light tranquil paintings and heavy gold ceramic vases my ambition for this exhibition is to bring a sense of balance.

All is well.

Or is it?
