GALIA GLUCKMAN: ora(edge)
May 3 – May 31, 2018

Everard Read / CIRCA is proud to present Galia Gluckman’s ambitious new solo presentation ‘ora (edge)’ at CIRCA Cape Town. Opening the 3rd May the artist will conduct a walkabout on Saturday 5th May.

Ora (edge) marks Gluckman’s second exhibition with Everard Read CIRCA, and her first within the CIRCA Cape Town space. These features heavily focused and developed examples that have taken close to two years to complete. Many are large-scale and mark a developed and refined language of multi-faceted artworks on cotton paper with pigment ink, collage and acrylic paint. Her debut solo at Everard Read /CIRCA Johannesburg will open in the latter half of 2018.

Within the artist’s journey from order to disorder [or vice versa], one can sense a deep spirited investigation. Through the use of various visual references, colour and complex technical artistry and decision making, Gluckman achieves a dazzling alchemy of contrasting colours and frequencies. This sharp-eyed attention to detail evokes sensations of both pure abstraction and a unique vision of the world around us. Considering notions of self-reflection and meditation, Gluckman’s practice illustrates a poignant vision of ‘cellular memory, passion and what it means to be human’.

The artist explains:

‘We are all living in and subjected to time. I find myself carried from the end of one year into the start of the next, trying to make the most of it. Considering time, constantly keeping track of it, is a critically pertinent human condition that we all face on a daily basis- that sense of transience. I feel that the focus in my practice, like the repetitive cutting and pasting techniques that my work demands gives me physical manifestation of ‘time well spent’. Being aware of my mark making (as opposed to merely moving through the processes) further intensifies my desire and ambitions of being 100% within any present moment.’

Gluckman’s work has been featured in various Design and Art publications including Art South Africa, VISI, Elle Decoration, House and Leisure, House and Garden, as well as the Art Business News and Architectural Digest in the USA. Having showcased artworks in solo exhibitions both locally and overseas, she is represented in many private and corporate collections in Australia, Dubai, Israel, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and USA. In South Africa this includes the Leeu Collection Franschhoek, M & C SAATCHI ABEL Collection, Rupert Collection, South African Presidential Collection and The Spier Arts Collection.
