WATER DIXON
COMPOSED OF NOWS
Water Dixon's third solo exhibition at the gallery entitled Forever is Composed of Nows, takes its title from Emily Dickinson: the proposition that eternity is not a different kind of time, but ordinary time with its markers removed. The works presented explore this enquiry through three central questions — time, the viewer as subject, and alchemical transformation. In patinated metal and glass, the artists compress decades of natural process into surfaces that carry within them the artifact of transformation. As mirrors, the works return the viewer to themselves, making each encounter singular and unrepeatable. The Cosmogram, The Standing Moment, the Nacre — each work draws on forms and phenomena that have recurred across human history and 500 million years of natural evolution, inviting the viewer into a felt sense of participation in something vast and ongoing. At home in the universe. Composed of Nows — Forever.
By Emily Dickinson
Forever is composed of Nows —
’Tis not a different time,
Except for infiniteness
And latitude of home.
From this, experienced here,
Remove the dates to these,
Let months dissolve in further months,
And years exhale in years.
Without certificate or pause
Or celebrated days,
As infinite our years would be
As Anno Domini’s.
