Everard Read Cape Town presents a collection of new bronze sculpture by renowned South African artist, Guy du Toit.

In an age of extraordinary technological ambition, political absurdity and increasing estrangement from ourselves, Guy du Toit’s sculptures offer a welcome reminder of something rather simpler: what it means to be human.

For more than a decade, Dutoit’s hares have acted as our proxies. Curious, vulnerable, resourceful, eccentric and endlessly inventive, they inhabit the space between the animal and the human, allowing us to recognise ourselves at a slight remove. They make us laugh at our foibles while, at the same time, reminding us to cherish them.

There is humility in these works, but also mischief. Against the hubris of our age, Dutoit proposes humour—not as escape, but as a way of seeing ourselves more clearly. His hares contemplate, embrace, read, offer flowers and simply carry on: small acts that quietly affirm the value of tenderness, curiosity and connection.

Perhaps this is Dutoit’s greatest achievement. He turns us into hares so that we can see ourselves again—and invites us, with a smile, to be more human, not less.?
